Living with four seasons here at Montrêux Golf & Country Club means that you get to enjoy all the different activities that come with the change in weather and temperature. We are at the start of winter here in Northern Nevada and the outdoors are still calling us! With over 300 days of sunshine a year on average, snowy activities are a lot of fun even for folks used to a warmer climate. And there’s nothing like enjoying some fresh mountain air!
Snowshoeing
One of the most accessible activities you can enjoy in Reno-Tahoe this winter is snowshoeing. Rentals are available here in town and all around the lake for the day. One of the best parts about snowshoeing is that you can do it anywhere! Find yourself one of the many trails in the area or pull your car over to a spot that looks nice and enjoy a little adventure. You can even snowshoe right here in Montrêux! Be sure to stick to populated areas and keep your eyes out for wild animals. Even in winter, a bear or mountain lion might still make an appearance.
Skiing
Reno Tahoe is the perfect destination for any skier (or snowboarder). We even played host to the Winter Olympics in 1960 at Squaw Valley. Slopes are as close to 20 minutes (10 minutes for the lower hill) from the gates of Montrêux and as far as an hour. You can take your pick from more than two dozen resorts in the area! Many area resorts also offer a variety of cross-country skiing trails to keep you entertained. Be sure to check the health and safety protocols of local resorts before planning your trip.
Snowmobiling
Enjoy an exhilarating ride at high altitude! Snowmobiles can take you to heights that would be difficult to reach snowshoeing and terrain that would be dangerous on skis. There are a handful of tour options in the Lake Tahoe area where you can explore thrilling backcountry on a high-speed ride all with snowy alpine scenery behind you.
Ice Skating
Save room for plenty of hot chocolate, it’s time to hit the rink! Reno and Tahoe are home to many outdoor ice-skating rinks that have an air of holiday magic. Coming soon, Reno Ice will the first indoor rink here in Reno. The wintry, fairy-tale-like settings of the rink are sure to put anyone on cloud nine!
Sleigh Rides
Yes, you read that correctly – sleigh rides! Forget about ice skating… a sleigh ride through Tahoe is the stuff of magic. Relax and soak in the beauty while taking your friends and family on a unique high altitude snow adventure. You will feel like you’ve become one with nature as you ride freely through trees covered in thickets of snow surrounded by the Sierra Nevada Mountain range.
These are just a handful of fun and adventurous things to do outdoors in Reno-Tahoe in the winter! With the surrounding mountains and forest, mild seasons, and tons of sunshine, there are wonderful activities to experience any time of year.
